Holy Days and Holidays

The Felician Center always looks for times to celebrate that which is GOOD!

Sister Susanne always reads or tells the sacred story connected with the secular holiday.  There is “the birth of Jesus” before Santa Claus, the “suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus” before the Easter bunny.  Sister Johnna also shares a wonderful kid-friendly DVD series of the holydays/holidays known as the Bed Bug series.  The kids love it and sing and dance along with it.

In the Fall, children enjoy a safe Halloween “trick or treating” at the homes of the neighbors of the Sisters in the daylight.  The neighbors look forward to giving treats such as bags of microwave popcorn, small boxes of cereal, mini-pretzels, Halloween coloring books and of course some candy, too. The children engage in related art activities and play pass the pumpkin as part of the festivities.

Christmas time is very special and many benefactors help to make this happen.  The wives of the Knights of Columbus, Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and Kingstree United Methodist Church, Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Taylors, SC, St. Andrew Catholic Church, Myrtle Beach, SC and Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School, Coraopolis, PA are some of the friends that sponsor the Christmas bags, parties and joys of the season.  Candy canes, a wall cross with a nativity scene, boxes of cereal, hoodies, scarves and gloves as well as their one toy from Santa brought boundless joy and appreciation from the children.  All the children received a new outdoor jacket from the Knights of Columbus.  A magic show and holiday cookies completed the festivities.

Spring and Eastertime involved the children in the outdoor garden and planting.  Hams provided by the Kingstree Rotary were given to each family and Easter baskets filled with treats were awarded after an egg hunt.

Now in the summertime, the Sisters took some small girls to a production of “Cinderella” for kids and some small boys to see CARS 3.  There will be in indoor board game day and a water slide day coming up, too.  For 8 weeks, Sister Carol Ann and Sister Jackie are preparing kid friendly grocery bags for the children who miss out on the school year’s free breakfast and lunch program.

Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.  Robert Collier

The people of Felician Center are so very blessed by many who make these efforts with us all year long.  Thanks.
