Thorne Avenue Neighborhood Home Visits

In the spring of 2021, Felician Center was awarded a $50,000 SACRED HEART CHARITABLE GRANT from the Sisters of St. Francis, Denver, Colorado.  The funding was to support works of peace and justice, education and earth care for the good communities and all creation.

As we anticipate the 30th year anniversary of the Felician Center (August 11, 2021 to August 11, 2022) It was decided to focus on the neighborhood where the Felician Sisters reside in Kingstree, SC for the use of the funding.  The funds would be used to improve the self-image and standard of living, to offer a more decent appearance to the neighborhood, to invest in some exterior home improvements and to support local businesses with the spending.

The project will have 4 seasonal phases.  Mandatory quarterly meetings would be held for the residents to address all kinds of issues.  Participants will be expected to clean up their properties to be eligible for exterior home improvements.  Site visits will be made to confirm participation.  Local government will cooperate by waiving permits and providing additional trash pickup during the project.

Thorne Avenue is 1.5 miles long and it appears that 65 homes actually have residents.

On June 2, 2021, Sister Carol, Sister Johnna and Sister Susanne hand delivered to each home invitations to the first quarterly gathering to be held on June 7, 2021.  More information will be available after the first gathering.

In addition, the participants will learn about St. Francis and his “go repair my house” inspirations.  The Peace Prayer of St. Francis will also be prayed at each gathering.
